Is Cream Cheese Frosting Keto-Friendly?

Regular cream cheese frosting or icing is typically not keto-friendly as it usually is packed with sugar.

Making keto cream cheese frosting that is sugar-free and keto-friendly is relatively simple.

This is a low-carb icing that you can even pipe on cupcakes or cookies and you can use it as keto icing on cinnamon rolls or to spread on cakes.

Ingredients for Keto Frosting

This cream cheese frosting without powdered sugar has a balanced flavor that’s not overly sweet or sharp. It turns out just right every time. You only need four basic ingredients:

Full-fat cream cheese

Unsalted butter

Powdered low-carb sweetener

Vanilla extract

The texture of this sugar-free cream cheese frosting is incredibly smooth and satisfying. It’s so good that I often enjoy a small spoonful on its own when I want something sweet. Add a few fresh berries if you want a quick low carb treat.

How to Make Keto Cream Cheese Frosting

To get a silky smooth sugar-free frosting, use the right ingredients and follow the steps in the recipe card below.

1. Let the cream cheese and butter soften at room temperature so they blend together without any lumps. Expect them to soften in about 1 to 2 hours.

2. Always choose full-fat cream cheese. Low-fat or spreadable types change both texture and taste.

3. Use a powdered sweetener. A fine, confectioners-style sweetener such as powdered erythritol is needed to achieve that smooth finish.

4. A good vanilla extract is important. It adds the slight flavor that completes the frosting and makes it taste rich and indulgent.

5. Using an electric mixer make the frosting and have fun with your dessert.

Different Sugar-Free Frosting Flavors

Also, this is a very versatile frosting and can easily be changed. If you add a dash of cinnamon or a tablespoon of cocoa powder the flavor can change to your all time favorite.

Here’s some of the best to make cream cheese frosting flavors:

Pumpkin Spice: You’ll need about a ½ tsp of pumpkin pie spice.

Lemon: Just one tsp of the lemon extract is enough to make a delicious frosting for my keto blueberry muffins.

Coconut: Just add one whole teaspoon of coconut extract.

Gingerbread: Just one teaspoon of ginger for the spice.

Coffee: Just like me if you love coffee, a some few teaspoons of instant coffee powder make a very yummy frosting.

Tips for Making Keto Cream Cheese Frosting

It’s important to get full-fat cream cheese, not the low-fat or tub kind of spreadable cream cheese.

I recommend using unsalted butter to have more control over the frosting flavor.

Be sure to take the cream cheese and butter out of the refrigerator to allow them to reach room temperature before you begin. This way, the frosting will mix thoroughly and avoid clumping.
